Humiliated and Insulted is now one of my favorite novels by Dostoevsky. Narrated by a young author, Vanya, who has just released his first novel which bears an obvious resemblance to Dostoevsky’s own first novel, Poor Folkit consists of two gradually converging subplots.

I’d really prefer to give this book three and a half stars but I’ve rounded up because it’s Dostoevsky, whose works I consider to be almost sacred territory in literature. From the Notes of an Unknown Penguin Classics. Every one of the characters in this book is humilliated or insulted in some way.
The result is what the novel’s translator, Ignat Avsay, has labeled “Dostoevsky-lite”. Characters in a book, or real people? This note of personal feeling, this harsh reality of actual experience, undoubtedly dostevsky Humiliated and Insulted something of its strange fervour and terrible passion, yet it has not made it egotistic; we see things from every point of view, and we feel not that action has been trammelled by fact, but that fact itself has become ideal and imaginative.
Oscar Wilde claimed that Humiliated and Insulted is “not anc all inferior to the other great masterpieces,” and Friedrich Nietzsche is said to have wept over it. I’ve read Ignat Avsey’s translation of “The Karamazov Brothers” and I rank it somewhere among the top five books I’ve ever read, so it’s more than likely that I approached “Humiliated and Insulted” with unrealistically high expectations. The translation is superb and reads better, in my opinion, than any Dostoevsky translation I have read. It is later revealed that Prince Valkovsky huimliated Nellie’s father and her parents were legally married. Including illustrations; four pages in the original Russian; informative essay looking at Dostoevsky’s entire career as a writer.

One of the most important themes throughout Dostoevsky’s work is the expiative value of suffering, and The Anf and Injured, with its tragically moving plot and characters, develops that theme. The Village of Stepanchikovo: The nuanced psychology of characters and their social interactions, as well as the profound social and philosophical ideas that feature so predominantly in Dostoevsky’s greatest works are noticeably absent from Humiliated and Insulted.
At the centre of the story are a young struggling author, an orphaned teenager and a depraved aristocrat, who not only foreshadows the great figures of evil in Dostoevsky’s later fiction, ryodor is a powerful literary presence in hukiliated own right. I have to say that I agree with you totally, I was touched by this novel at many levels of humanity, I read it in Arabic and Insulte couldn’t help it but feel the pain and suffering Nelly went through despite her age also the solid hard heart Smith had Against our wills we are drawn in, whirled round, blinded, suffocated, and at the same time filled with a giddy rapture.

Despite being instantly recognizable as a “Dostoevsky” novel, there can be little doubt that Humiliated and Insulted is inferior to the author’s later, better-known works.
The other branch of the plot deals with the approximately year-old orphan Nellie, whom Vanya saves from an abusive household by taking her into his apartment, and whose deceased mother’s story in some ways parallels that of Natasha.
